Short and Sweet: Doula Supported Birth at New Hanover Regional Medical Center

Birth

I don’t know how I get so lucky with my clients, these two are some of the friendliest, most loving, and all around coolest people you’ll ever meet and they chose me to be at the birth of their second daughter: such an honor. When we met for our consultation, mama let me know that she was hoping for a different experience from her first birth – which was long and tiring – and she definitely got it!

My home is 3 short miles from the local hospital, and every so often that comes in really handy. This was one of those times. When I got the call from her doula to make my way to the birth I was told “we’re just checking in and she’s 8cm and ‘pushy.'” This was 2am or so and I flew through my routine (take a quick shower and brush teeth because no one wants a stinky photographer and nothing tricks me into believing the middle of the night is the morning better than a shower, turn coffee pot on, grab pre-packed birth bag and snacks) and arrived at the hospital 11 minutes after I hung up the phone. Eleven.

I arrived, took photos, checked in with dad and doula, and about an hour and a spinal block later my client realized I was there 😉 I am so happy that she got the experience she was hoping for, and as always I am so glad I was there to capture that miraculous moment of three becoming four and the unwavering support and power of this family.
